Jim O'Connor Memorial Castle to Castle Swim

Saturday August 24th 2024

The Jim O'Connor Memorial Castle to Castle Swim is a 13.5 km swim from Rindoon Castle on Lough Ree in Co. Roscommon to Athlone Castle in Co. Westmeath in aid of Pieta.

It will be open to 30 solo swimmers and up to 80 relay swimmers (20 teams with a max of 4 per relay team). Swimmers will be guided and supported by boats and kayaks with the help of local clubs including Athlone Sub Aqua Club and Inny Kayak Club.

Swimmer safety is top priority so each solo swimmer will be required to source an experienced kayaker to guide them and each relay team will be required to source a boat with an experienced captain.

The event is a major fundraising drive for Pieta and is a memorial swim for the late Jim O’Connor organised by Athlone Regional Sports Centre along with Jim’s family and friends.

About Jim

Jim O’Connor had a great love for the water and the fun and camaraderie he experienced with his fellow swimmers from his early days in the old Athlone pool to later years in Athlone RSC.

Never afraid of a challenge, Jim fearlessly tackled the vast expanse of Lough Ree “in skins” in August 2012. Jim’s journey was filled with courage, determination, boundless enthusiasm and relentless training.

His remarkable solo swim saw him become the first and only swimmer to conquer the lake’s formidable length without a wetsuit.
